Burgas Municipality was honored as the most active cycling municipality in Bulgaria. The awards - a diploma and bicycle, were given to the deputy mayor of "European policies and programs and environment" Atanaska Nikolova for her overall policy for promoting cycling in the city by building infrastructure and promoting alternative transport in the city.
The contest was held within project "Mobile 2020 - more bikes in small and medium cities of Central and Eastern Europe", funded under intelligent energy Europe program. The project aims to increase the share of bicycles as vehicles for transporting in the city.
The awarding ceremony was held in the hall of Burgas Municipality. Also awards were given to the winners in the video contest "By Bike in the City".
Hosts of the event were Burgas Municipality and Regional Information Center - Burgas.
Within this three-year project was published the first guide for planning policies in bicycle infrastructure in Bulgaria. It gathers the most current knowledge and best practices of Europe. Municipal staff and experts were trained for designing cycling infrastructure for clean and green cities in Bulgaria.
